Ridding the world of wars is an essential step in eradicating hunger, FAO Director-General Jose Graziano da Silva said today. “Peace and the end of conflicts are fundamental in the battle against hunger, which is FAO’s constant goal,” he said in a statement to honor the International Day of Peace.

Some 39 countries, 31 of which are in Africa, seven in Asia and one in the Caribbean (Haiti), are in need of external food assistance, according to a new FAO report. It stresses that protracted conflicts, extreme weather events and displacement continue hampering food access for millions of vulnerable people.

International trade rules established under the auspices of the WTO and newer mechanisms created under the Paris Agreement aimed at responding to climate change can be mutually supportive, argues The State of Agricultural Commodity Markets, 2018. To achieve this, national agricultural and trade policies may need to be readjusted to help transform the global marketplace into a pillar of food security and a tool for climate change adaptation, FAO's report says.

The decision to reaffirm this international political engagement and encourage resource partners to join the fight against the disease came at the global conference: Partnering and investing for a PPR-free world, organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), and hosted by the European Commission in Brussels.

The FAO Food Price Index averaged 167.6 points in August, virtually unchanged from its revised estimate for July and 5.4 percent below its level in August 2017. The FAO Cereal Price Index rose 4.0 percent during the month, with wheat prices rising twice as much.
