Monitoring carbon stocks in Tanzania Soil carbon to reduce greenhouse gas emissions
16 May 2012, Rome ? FAO has assisted the United Republic of Tanzania to conduct a National Forest Resources Monitoring and Assessment project. The soil survey component of the project was presented today at the UN Climate Change Conference in Bonn, Germany. Deforestation and forest degradation contribute to climate change also by releasing soil carbon to the atmosphere.

As the soil carbon pool is huge changes in it can have remarkable effect on the co2 concentration of the atmosphere. FAO assists experts and policy makers in Tanzania to develop and implement methodologies to assess the current soil carbon stock and its changes.
