Genetic diversity a hidden tool in coping with climate change
19 January 2015, Rome--- Genetic diversity is being described as a “hidden tool” for a world coping with climate change. This message and more are being highlighted in a new book released today by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). It’s called: ´Coping with climate change: the roles of genetic resources for food and agriculture’. According to FAO, it is the raw material of our food systems which is key to helping agriculture adapt to volatile weather and rising temperatures.
Linda Collette is Secretary of the Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture. In the following interview she explains the role of genetic diversity in coping with climate change, what stage the world is at in terms of having the right policies and conservation programmes in place, and talks about one African country that is showing the right initiative.
