How to cope with food price increases
Press Conference by FAO Director-General Jacques Diouf to launch immediate action plan Recent dramatic increases in food and commodity prices are threatening the food security of millions of people in many of the world¿s poorest developing countries, especially those which rely heavily on food imports. However, in view of the magnitude of the problem, it is unlikely that national policies alone will be sufficient to protect the poor. Some form of concerted international action is needed.

"Many governments are trying to moderate the impact of high prices through restricting exports or reducing tariffs on imported food", said Mr Jacques Diouf. Rising food prices have sparked social tensions in many parts of the world but could have a positive impact on small farmers' production capacity.
