FAO, the Convention on Biological Diversity and their partners meet in Rome,

More than 40 percent of the land's surface is used for agriculture, placing a large responsibility on farmers to protect biodiversity . FAO's message calls for "urgent remedial action" against hunger and rural poverty. Excerpt from statement by FAO Deputy Director-General James G. Butler:
Italy, with a record of Biodiversity in Europe, needs more connections across the world. Today, as the meeting opens, Italy has joined the world movement to reducing the rate of Biodiversity loss and signed the 'Countdown 2010' Initiative in the presence of world delegates at FAO.
