28 October 2013, Rome – Africa’s largest gathering of rice industry experts and specialists for the 3rd Africa Rice Congress closed last week in Yaoundé, Cameroon, with a call for increased FAO support. After deliberations by more than 650 delegates from 60 countries, FAO was asked to help boost production levels in order to enable governments to achieve food self-sufficiency in rice. Despite positive signs of growth, levels of rice production are still low in many African countries, enabling continued dependency on rice imports.
