AMARC joins FAO in celebrating World Food Day
16 October 2013, Rome – The World Association of Community Radio Broadcasters AMARC and its network of reporters across continents have put their ears to the ground in anticipation of World Food Day this year. In an exploration of this year’s theme looking at “Sustainable Food Systems for Food Security and Nutrition”, local journalists explored the ways in which this notion plays out in the reality of different contexts including FAO’s at country level. Productions stemmed across four geographical regions: Asia-Pacific, Latin America, Caribbean, and Africa. AMARC, a long-standing FAO partner, is an international non-governmental organization serving the community radio movement, with almost 4,000 members and associates in 110 different countries.
Eric Schlosser, the author of “Fast Food Nation: The Dark Side of the All-American Meal,” writes that it is not only what is served for human consumption that plagues the country, but the art of mass marketing to children – through organized promotions and ads in school buses, hallways and even bathroom stalls – that has serious side effects in society.
