Sustainable development of Small Island Developing States a global litmus test

3 September 2014, Apia, Samoa/Rome--- Through its new Blue Growth Initiative, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations is helping Small Island Developing States (SIDS) around the world sustainably use their aquatic resources. The goal is to advance food security, improve nutrition, and reduce poverty in vulnerable areas. During the 3rd International UN Conference on Small Island Developing States taking place this week in Apia, Samoa (1-4 September), FAO’s Director-General José Graziano da Silva will highlight key areas where action is needed. One main area of work will be to improve the management and use of natural resources.

Indroyono Soesilo is the Director of the Fisheries and Aquaculture Resources Use and Conservation Division at FAO headquarters in Rome. In the following interview he elaborates on what the Blue Growth Initiative includes and why this work is crucial for Small Island Developing States.
