Parties to FAO’s treaty tackling illegal fishing meet in Oslo
FAO/Antonello Proto
29 mai 2017, Rome--- Last June, a ground-breaking treaty aimed at stamping out illegal fishing was signed by twenty-nine countries and the European Union, binding them to international law. After years of diplomatic efforts spearheaded by the UN’s Food and Agriculture organization, the agreement on Port State Measures – or PSMA - became the world’s first treaty that focuses specifically on illicit fishing. According to FAO, IUU fishing is estimated to strip between $10 billion and $23 billion from the seafood industry annually. Starting today parties will meet in Oslo, Norway for the first time in a three-day conference to follow up on the work being done.

Matthew Camilleri, FAO Fisheries Liaison Officer, tells us more about this meeting. (Interview conducted by Sandra Ferrari)
