FAO's new report THE STATE OF AGRICULTURAL COMMODITY MARKETS 2004 (SOCO 2004)
Tuesday, 15 February 2005, Rome/Geneva:FAO's first biennial report on Agricultural Commodity Markets focuses on the impact that declining prices for agricultural commodities has had on food security for the world's poorest countries. The report examines recent developments and long-term trends in agricultural commodity markets, including changing terms of trade for agricultural commodities. It looks at the risks of depending on just a few commodity exports and considers the implications that trade barriers in developed countries, including tariff escalation and producer support, have for developing countries, particularly the least developed countries.

Mr. Hartwig de Haen, FAO Assistant Director General, Economic and Social Department, has launched "The State of Agricultural Commodity Markets 2004" (SOCO 2004), FAO's first biennial report on Agricultural Commodity Markets. In a News Conference in Rome, he presented the major findings:

To combat the growing problems caused by oversupply and market distortions that penalize exports of processed goods from developing countries, FAO will pursue talks within the framework of the on-going WTO trade negociations. Again, Mr. de Haen:
