Small Ruminants' Plague threatens 1billion animals in the world
Peste des Petits Ruminants (Small Ruminants' Plague), or PPR, is considered as the most destructive viral disease affecting small ruminant flocks. A recent emergency mission to Tanzania by FAO's Crisis Management Centre - Animal Health (CMC-AH) stressed the need to strengthen animal disease diagnostic capacities in FAO and IAEA Member States in order to better control PPR expansion. Mission team leader Adama Diallo said the disease is easily transmissible by direct contact between live affected animals in shared pastures and at live animal markets.
