Keeping foot-and-mouth disease under control in the Balkans
9 February 2015, Rome--- Foot and Mouth disease – also known as FMD - is a “viral” disease that effects cloven-hoofed animals. Even a single outbreak of FMD has massive economic implications for any country. While the EU is virus free for the moment, FMD is circulating in countries around Europe in approximately 100 countries in Africa, the Middle East, and large parts of Eurasia. The European Union and the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) have recently stepped up efforts to assist countries to prepare for any possible outbreaks.
Keith Sumption is FAO’s FMD expert on phone in London. He is also Secretary of the European Commission for Control of Foot-and-Mouth Disease (EuFMD) which is based at FAO headquarters in Rome. In the following interview he explains the concerns around FMD at the moment and how the EU is preparing for potential outbreaks.
