State of World’s Soil Resources Report

“We should be concerned about the current situations of soils”, explains Ronald Vargas, FAO Soils and Management Officer. The report indicates that soil acidity, seeding and loss of organic carbon are having heavy negative effects on food productivity. Priorities in the near future are the implementation of sustainable soil management practices, better policy making, and activities to halt degradation, with special attention to climate change adaptation and mitigation. FAO’s work will focus on implementing the World Soil Charter principles and helping farmers to fight soil erosion, guiding them to wise use of nutrients, rotation and diversification of crops.
