Harvesting under fire in Eastern Ukraine
In eastern Ukraine, family-run farms are feeling the impact of the on-going conflict. The results of a household survey carried out by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) paint a bleak picture for food security and agricultural productivity in Donetsk and Lugansk regions. Skipping meals, migrating to find work, borrowing money, selling assets, killing livestock and planting less are just some of the ways these families are dealing with the security and production challenges they are facing - but for many, their resilience is stretched to the limit.
