FAO calls on donors to support Syrian farmers
The conflict in Syria is gradually destroying the agriculture sector, causing dramatic loss of productivity and price rises. FAO Emergencies Chief, Dominique Burgeon, illustrates the current situation and explains why FAO is appealing to donors ahead of the London Conference scheduled for February 4th. Support to agriculture will help the over eight million food insecure people currently dependent on food assistance, but will also help them to stay on their land. Restoring agriculture is also cost effective approach, thus easing the economic burden on the international community in addressing the Syrian crisis.
