FAO Director honored by the U.S. National Academy of Sciences
Prabhu Pingali elected as a Foreign Associate of science organization
10 May 2007, Rome -- Prabhu Pingali, Director of FAO’s Agricultural Development Economics Division, has been elected to the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) as a Foreign Associate in recognition for his distinguished and continuing achievements in original research. Dr. Pingali is a citizen of India.

Dr. Pingali was one of only 18 non-United States citizens from 12 countries so honored by the prestigious organization of scientists, where full members must be U.S. citizens.

The NAS membership is composed of about 2,000 members and 387 foreign associates. The membership includes more than 200 Nobel Prize winners.

NAS advises U.S. government on science issues

The Academy was established by U.S. Congressional legislation signed in 1863 by President Abraham Lincoln and acts as an official adviser to the U.S. federal government, upon request, in any matter of science or technology.

On learning of his election as a Foreign Associate, Dr. Pingali said: “I am absolutely delighted to be elected to this very prestigious body. It’s recognition not just for me but for all of FAO.”

Pingali received his Ph.D in Economics from North Carolina State University and has devoted his entire career to agriculture in developing countries, living and working in all three developing continents.

His research and advisory work focused on technological change, environmental externalities and agricultural development policy. He has authored, or co-authored, nine books and 90 journal articles and book chapters.

Dr. Pingali was President of the International Association of Agricultural Economists from 2003 until 2006. He was named Fellow of the American Agricultural Economics Association in 2006.
