FAO in North America

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has deep roots in North America. The Organization was conceived of during a meeting in Hot Springs, Virginia in 1943 and its first headquarters was located in Washington, D.C. FAO shares with Canada and the United States a common vision of how to achieve a world without hunger and poverty. Both countries have been working closely with FAO since its inception more than 70 years ago.

FAO’s Liaison Office for North America works to support FAO policies and programs to end hunger and malnutrition worldwide through strategic partnerships in Canada and the United States. The Liaison Office provides a neutral platform for knowledge sharing on key areas including: food security and nutrition; food loss and waste; the one world, one health agenda; trade; gender; climate change; and resilience building.
