FAO’s Liaison Office for North America in Washington, D.C., advises and assists in the development and implementation of FAO policies and programmes by facilitating communication and cooperation between FAO and the Governments of Canada and the United States, and between FAO and the international and inter-American organizations based in Washington.
FAO Washington serves as a conduit for information by
- Reporting to FAO Headquarters on developments in North America regarding government policies, legislation, programmes, events and public opinion relevant to FAO’s programmes and objectives;
- Providing information on food, agriculture and rural development issues and on FAO objectives, policies and programmes to the North American governments and the public, including non-governmental and academic institutions.
Meet Director of the FAOLOW, Mr. Vimlendra Sharan who joined the office in December 2016.
Vimlendra Sharan, an Indian citizen, joined FAO as Director of the FAO Liaison Office for North America on December 1st, 2016. Mr. Sharan brings with him more than two decades of national and international government leadership experience focusing on rural development, agriculture and food security issues.
In 1992, Mr Sharan was appointed to the Indian Administrative Service and over his service career he has worked extensively in rural and tribal areas of Maharashtra in Western India and in New Delhi, where he was staff officer to the Union Minister for Agriculture & Food, a position which mandated his active involvement in agriculture and food policy formulation in Government of India. He subsequently worked as Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare and was responsible for issues pertaining to agriculture trade. Mr. Sharan comes to Washington from his previous posting as Permanent Representative of India to the Rome based UN Agencies. In Rome, Mr. Sharan was an active member of FAO’s Programme Committee for two terms, Chairman of the Evaluation Committee of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and Vice President of the Board of the World Food Programme (WFP).
Vimlendra Sharan holds a degree in Economics from University of Delhi, India and a MBA in Public Policy from University of Birmingham, UK.
