Communications Internship in Washington, DC

The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Liaison Office for North America is accepting applications for a Communications Intern to work from September 2014 through February 2015 (for 6 months) on a variety of communication projects. The Communications Intern will work in FAO’s Washington, DC, office.

Working under the supervision of the Senior Liaison Officer, the Communications intern’s duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Preparing background information for the media on selected topics, contributing to the preparation and publication of interviews, and prepare speaking points in support of FAO interaction with the media
  • Drafting press releases and contributing to outreach to the media, including facilitation of media contacts and assisting with organizing press briefings, as required
  • Creating visual presentations and corresponding materials on FAO’s position on issues of concern for a North American audience.
  • Conducting research, both related to substantive issues of interest for FAO and to the media environment in Washington
  • Assisting with the adaptation of FAO’s technical information to language that is suitable for a general audience
  • Using interagency and other mechanisms as tools to raise the visibility of FAO
  • Preparing contents for the FAO Washington blog and other media products
  • Attending press briefings and other relevant briefings, as required
  • Other communications-related duties, as required

Required skills and experience:

  • Graduate-level students strongly preferred
  • Background in Communications or Journalism preferred
  • Excellent writing and editing skills
  • Excellent research and analytical skills
  • Experience working with the media preferred
  • Experience working with WordPress or other blog software an advantage
  • Interest in international development and cooperation
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to work creatively, independently and as a team member
  • Ability to work full time preferred, but part-time can be considered
