Background

This year marks the first ever observance of the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste. It also comes during the global COVID-19 pandemic, which has brought about a wake-up call on the need to transform and rebalance the way we produce and consume our food.

Reducing food loss and waste is essential in a world where more than a third of the food produced is wasted and the number of people affected by hunger has been rising. Food loss and waste also puts unnecessary pressure on the environment, depleting the natural resource base and generating greenhouse gas emissions.

To rethink the ways in which we produce and handle our food, and to highlight actions and solutions to reduce food loss and waste, FAO North America and the Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC) will host a twitter chat on the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste on Tuesday, September 29 from 10-11 AM EDT.

The questions will be posted from @FAONorthAmerica every 10 minutes on September 29th from 10am onwards.

Join the chat to share your insights and solutions!
