BEFS Project to analyze linkages between bioenergy and food security
Rapid development of bioenergy will affect food security in numerous ways. The effects will be context-specific, depend on biomass potential, country characteristics and technology. Increased competition for land and water resources may result, and higher and less stable food prices may be one of many possible consequences. Bioenergy may also provide ways to support rural development and raise farm incomes. The Bioenergy and Food Security (BEFS) Project will analyze the risks and opportunities of bioenergy and how it could affect food security in partner countries. An overview of the project, strategy and objectives is available in the BEFS Project Overview. The BEFS Project Task Force provides strategic and technical guidance, with the daily work of the project supported by the core project team, internationally recognized research institutes and external experts.
For more information on the linkages between bioenergy, country typologies, key concepts related to the bioenergy and food security nexus, see Background.
The Bioenergy and Food Security (BEFS) Project is funded by the
Government of Germany. The project is implemented by the FAO Climate
Change and Bioenergy Division, Natural Resources Management and
Environment Department.
