In the face of increasing water scarcity, and the continued dominance of agricultural water use, FAO has a prime responsibility to enhance global agricultural performance while promoting the sustainability of water use for food production and the environment preservation.
The Water Development and Management Unit (NRLW) is thus engaged in a programmatic approach to agricultural water management that accounts for water use efficiency and productivity through the continuum from water sources to final uses. Specific targets are strategies for integrated water resources management, water harvesting, the use of non-conventional waters, modernization of irrigation systems, improved water-quality management, farm-systems water management, institutional capacities, national water policies and transboundary waters management.
With continually updated water resources information products such as AQUASTAT, and tools for analysis such as AQUACROP and MASSCOT, NRLW is able to contribute in the formulation of national and regional water management strategies.
