GIAHS website disseminates information about outstanding, unique and evolving agricultural systems around the world. It is meant to be a platform to identify and recognise existing “GIAHS” around the world.

Main objectives of this Website are:

• enhance understanding of the Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems, and of their diverse environmental, socio-economic attributes, their agricultural biodiversity of global significance and knowledge systems as well as landscape diversity, cultural and natural heritage and dynamic evolution;
• raise awareness among the development community of the role of GIAHS in sustainable agriculture and rural development process;
• help local and national development practitioners to mainstream dynamic conservation of GIAHS into their regular programme agenda and activities;
• to liaise with other websites, portals and information systems dealing on natural resources management, farming systems, indigenous knowledge systems, animal and plant genetic resources for food and agriculture; and
• identify, evaluate and document known and unknown agricultural systems of great importance to sustainable agriculture and rural development and livelihood security. 

The Communication Strategy

In addition to the interactive features of the website, in order to raise awareness and understanding of GIAHS, the Secretariat of the initiative in coordination with national focal institutions is developing a series of communication products for the following audiences and stakeholders:

• farmers, farmers’ cooperatives and community-based organization
• schools/universities
• governments/policy makers
• civil society
• scientific community
• donors
