During the PDF-B phase, six pilot countries were submitted for GEF funding, representing five traditional agricultural systems with diverse agrobiodiversity, associated biodiversity and landscapes, knowledge systems and cultural practices were identified. Additional two countries (Kenya and Tanzania), supported by the Federal Republic of Germany, are added in the piloting of dynamic conservation of GIAHS. Over the next five years these Pilot GIAHS serve to develop a conservation programme based on adaptive management and the search for economic viability of the system; by identifying economically and environmentally sustainable strategies in the face of growing climate change; and empowerment of small holder/traditional family farming and indigenous communities.
