The Steering Committee of the LADA project has met on Saturday 26 September 2009. Delegates from the six pilot countries and the technical partners participated in the meeting.
A delegation of the LADA project took part in the works of the UNCCD Committee for Science and Technology (CST) that took place in Buenos Aires, Argentina from 21 to 25 of September. The delegation was constituted by both FAO and pilot countries personnel. A progress report was presented in front of the Plenary of the CST by the project coordinator. Also, the delegation participated in the three days Scientific Conference that will prepare the statement to be presented to the Conference of Parties. Two LADA related side events were also organized.
A training workshop on LADA methodologies and techniques has been carried out in China by the Chinese LADA team. The training was addressed to a group of Mongolian technicians with the aim to implement LADA methods within rural development projects in Mongolia. The training constituted the startup of the LADA training centre for Asia, and was funded by the LADA project and the UNDP Representation in Mongolia. The report of the workshop is available here.
After one year of testing period for the website, the LADA team decided to remove the registration procedure so to allow a more user-friendly browsing of our pages and a wider dissemination of the project outcome. As of today, all documents can be viewed without restrictions by all users. We hope that this innovation is appreciated. More improvements will come in the next weeks.
A four-day workshop on the LADA methodology has been organized in Bangkok, Thailand from the 26 to the 30 of April, in collaboration with the Land Development Department of Thailand. The workshop has been attended by the representatives of seven countries of the South-East Asia region, including Thailand, Indonesia, Laos, Vietnam, Myanmar, Cambodia and the Philippines. The agenda has included presentations on the status of land degradation studies in these countries and experts speeches addressing specific issues. The LADA methodology was presented by a team including also a representative of China, one of the project’s pilot countries.
The workshop has been an opportunity for starting the introduction of the methodology within the national programs of the participating countries.
The manual for local scale assessment within the LADA methodology has been finalized and it is now available on this website. It is comprised of two parts: Part 1 contains the methodological concepts, while Part 2 is dedicated to the practical assessment tools.
The manual is the result of a collective effort led by the LADA team and the University of East Anglia.
A three-day workshop on the LADA methodology has been organized in Nairobi, Kenya from the 7 to the 9 of April, in collaboration with UNEP. The workshop has been attended by the representatives of the LADA pilot countries and several international and regional organizations. During the first day, a restricted technical group analyzed the outcome of the global studies carried out within the LADA project. The second and third day, a broader audience has been exposed to those results and to the LADA methodology in general. The workshop was an opportunity for seeking and reinforcing collaborations between the project and other regional and international programs.
A global LADA workshop took place in Mendoza, Argentina, from the 26 to the 31 January 2009, with the purpose of finalizing the local assessment methodology of the LADA project. All the six LADA pilot countries participated in the workshop with their delegations. Five international consultants, including representatives of WOCAT and UEA, attended the workshop. The workshop was organized by the LADA Coordiantion in Argentina with the local LADA team in Mendoza. During the workshop, all countries presented their experiences in implementing the local assessment methods. The workshop included two days of field activity and was carachterized by a friendly and constructive atmosphere. At the end of the workshop, key indicators have been identified per each section of the methodology. The results of the workshop will be condensated in the final version of the local assessment manual, to be ready by the first decade of March.
