World Day to Combat Desertication 2014

FAO, UNCCD and the Government of Italy joining forces to combat desertification, land degradation and drought

On the occasion of the 2014 WDCD and in the context of the 149th session of the FAO Council, the Government of Italy, FAO and the GM are celebrating the inauguration of the GM’s Office at FAO with a side event on “Land for Life – How Sustainable Land Management can Improve People’s Livelihood and Resilience”. The side event will highlight activities of FAO, UNCCD and the Governments of Italy and Kuwait to combat desertification, land degradation and drought and present the priorities of the newly established GM office at FAO.

GLOBAL LAND COVER SHARE (GLC-SHARE)

Assesing and monitoring our earth’s land and water resources to support food security and early warning system with contributions from all

FAO’s new database includes eleven global land cover layers each representing the major land cover classes defined by the FAO and System of environmental-Economic Accounting (SEEA) legend. It brings global land cover data under one roof for the first time and represents the most-reliable global view of planetary land cover assembled to-date. This new product collects previously scattered and unharmonized land cover information from around the globe into one centralized database, marking a major improvement in information regarding the physical characteristics of the Earth’s surface. Up to now, one of the major challenges for countries and organizations was to identify, measure and record efficiently a good global overview of land cover.

La Facilitation pour la gouvernance territoriale

La Conférence internationale sur la réforme agraire et le développement rural (CIRADR) mit en place une tribune pour des discussions sur les politiques foncières4. À cette occasion, la FAO a présenté une proposition pour une méthode novatrice, en mesure de combattre ces problèmes: la méthode du développement territorial participatif et négocié (DTPN).

L’objectif du présent document est de mieux définir certaines caractéristiques des ressources humaines qui s’avèrent indispensables si l’on veut «contribuer» au processus de convergence progressive et de collaboration entre les divers acteurs.
