The project launch workshop will take place from 8 to 11 September at FAO Headquarters in Rome, with the participation of 15 countries (Argentina, Bangladesh, Bosnia-Herzegovina, China, Columbia, Ecuador, Lesotho, Morocco, Nigeria, Panama, Philippines, Thailand, Tunisia, Turkey, Uzbekistan) and the WOCAT Secretariat as executing partner. The workshop will introduce the technical concepts and approaches adopted by the project to implement the three interlinked components (i) national and local decision-support on combating desertification land degradation and drought (DLDD) and promoting mainstreaming and upscaling of SLM best practices; (ii) global DLDD and SLM knowledge management and decision-support platform; and (iii) monitoring and evaluation, impact assessment and dissemination of project results.
The meeting will provide the opportunity for countries to present their SLM status (data, past/ongoing activities and experiences in SLM scaling and mainstreaming, institutional arrangements) as well as proposed strategy, actions and co-financing arrangements for the project and required support from the global knowledge management platform and for monitoring and assessment.
Participants will also review required support through mobilizing additional resources at the regional level. This will be followed by a half day session on collaboration with other relevant global and regional activities. Finally the first project steering committee meeting will be held on Friday 11th a.m. to take decisions on operational and coordination issues. Operational matters will also be discussed in individual reviews with each country to develop the national workplan and modalities to transfer resources for the agreed activities at national/ subnational and landscape levels.
