Territorial Development Training in Rio Grande do Norte and Paraná (Brazil)

The Federal Delegation of the Ministry of Agrarian Development (MDA), through the Technical Cooperation Program TCP/BRA/3101, carried out a “Second Training Course for Technical Assistance and Rural Education Agents (ATER) with a Territorial Perspective” from 24–28 March 2008, which was held simultaneously in the states of Rio Grande do Norte and Paraná.
The objective of these training courses was to help participants to better understand processes under way in order to act as “drivers” for a more effective sustainable territorial development.
The trainings were based on the methodology of Participatory and Negotiated Territorial Development, PNTD, which has been applied in various countries where FAO has cooperation agreements and has been adapted to the realities of these territories.
Participants in the trainings were ATER officers, trade unionists, and representatives from municipal prefectures and from NGOs. The courses were conducted with the assistance of the FAO technical team: Mr. Pablo Sidersky, project coordinator; Ms. Sevy Madureira; Mr. Joao Torrens, and Ms. Geane Bezerra, assistant.
From Rio Grande do Norte, the specialists invited were: Hugo Manso, Federal Delegate of MDA; Deusimar Freire, Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte; Dione Freitas, AACC; Auricélio Costa, Territorial Development Secretariat of MDA; and Augusto Carvalho, DF/MDA. Also participating in the training was Dr. Paolo Groppo, from the FAO Technical Unit that is responsible for the project.
The specialists invited from Paraná were: Decio Cagnini, CAPA-Verê; Aldair Alberton, Aprovida; Alvelino Calegari and Jaci Poli, ASSESSOAR; José da Veiga, Emater; Altair Celuppi and Cristian Armendaris, Sisclaf; Antonio Freitas and Valdemir Gnoatto, Coopafi; and Adilson Deito, Cooperiguaçu.
