Biotechnologies for Food Security and Sustainable Agricultural Development

The Research and Extension Unit provides advice to FAO Members on development of national biotechnology strategies and biosafety frameworks and assists them to develop their capacities in agricultural biotechnologies and related issues through technical co-operation and training. It also assists in providing them with access to high-quality, updated, balanced science-based information about agricultural biotechnologies.

Agricultural biotechnologies represent a large range of technologies that are used for the genetic improvement of plant varieties and animal populations, characterization and conservation of genetic resources, diagnosis of plant and animal diseases, vaccine development and many other purposes. They can help to alleviate hunger and poverty, assist in adaptation to climate change and maintain the natural resource base.
