What was/is being done? The NGO started a Bread Distribution Programme in 2003 to collect and distribute unsold bread from bakeries and hotels with the help of 1700 active volunteers on a daily basis in Singapore. As of January 2011, the number of collection points stands at 230 at all times, with 100 – 150 homes receiving the unsold bread and pastries. Everyday, there are about 200 fixed routes and it takes approximately 1700 volunteers to service these routes in a week.
Outcomes and impacts On a monthly average, the FFTH Programme manages to save around 23,000kg of bread from going into the garbage bin. The retail value of bread distributed in the first five year of operation was SGD 7.5 million dollars.
