Call for best practices in low-input livestock management

Low input livestock production systems can contribute to preserving environmental integrity, improving animal health and welfare as well as economic and social wealth of livestock keepers through minimizing input costs and increasing profitability of livestock management.

Low input refers to production systems that follow organic or holistic management principles as well as to pastoral systems where significant efforts are made to increase sustainability throughout the supply chain.

We are inviting livestock keepers and producer groups to share with us sustainable management practices which reduce the veterinary and other external agricultural inputs in farming system, support grain free feed strategies and optimize herd density, land use or other livestock operations. Our aim is to create a database where success stories in best practices in livestock management can be easily accessible, shared and duplicated elsewhere.

For the purpose of this call we concentrate on the following three characteristics of the following operations aimed at improving sustainability of low-input livestock systems:

  • Land and livestock management operations intended to optimize land carrying capacity
  • No synthetic inputs in farming system
  • Reduced use of concentrate feed in animal diets
