FAO and the UN Economic Commission for Africa join efforts in improving land governance in Africa

On Friday 27 June, the partnership between FAO and the UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) was strengthened through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding by FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva and UNECA Executive Secretary Dr. Carlos Lopes. UNECA is the host institution of the Secretariat of the African Land Policy Initiative (LPI). The event took place in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea, during the 23rd Session of the Assembly of the African Union.

The objectives of the cooperation are to:

  • increase partnership, cooperation and synergy of actions in the areas of land policies and governance of tenure of land, fisheries and forests
  • promote comprehensive, inter-sectoral and effective land policies and the governance of tenure in order to provide equitable access to and security of tenure of land, fisheries and forests
  • support country level implementation of the African Union Declaration on Land Issues and Challenges in Africa and to support the improvement of the governance of tenure in line with the Framework and Guidelines on Land Policies in Africa of the LPI and in coherence with the Voluntary Guidelines on the Responsible Governance of Tenure
