Thematic discussion

During the AQUASTAT country updates, in addition to quantitative information, qualitative information is gathered on a number of different issues.

Referring to the profile sections on Geography, climate and population, qualitative and quantitative information is collected on:

Geography:

  • Location and extent of the country, major features, land cover, land use distribution, soil and terrain main characteristics (salinity, slopes, etc.). Data on area of the country, agricultural area, arable land area and permanent crops areas are taken from FAOSTAT.

Climate:

  • Climate classification, temporal and spatial variation in precipitation, temperature, evapotranspiration; climatic limitations for crop production.

Population:

  • total population, male/female population, percentage rural/urban, population density, annual growth rate, unemployment rate, poverty, water supply and sanitation coverage. Data on population are taken from FAOSTAT.

Referring to the profile sections on Economy, agriculture and food security, qualitative and quantitative information is collected on:

Economy:

  • Gross Domestic Product (GDP), share of agriculture in the country's economy and population involved (male and female population economically active in agriculture, share of GDP); food security situation of the country, trends and major constraints. Data on GDP are taken from the World Bank. Data on the Human Development Index (HDI) are taken from UNDP. Data on the Gender Inequality Index (GII) are also taken from UNDP.

Agriculture:

  • Brief presentation of the different agricultural systems: relative importance of rainfed and irrigated agriculture in the country

Food security:

  • Level of food self-sufficiency and trends, food imports, exports in percentage of food demand; trade issues related to agriculture (agreements, etc.). Data on undernourishment are taken from FAOSTAT.

Referring to the profile sections on Environment and health, qualitative and quantitative information is collected on:

Environment:

  • Water quality issues; general quality of water, in particular for agriculture; impact of irrigation/drainage and agriculture in general on water quality
  • Irrigation induced waterlogging and salinization: extent, estimated costs, trends (percentage of land salinized, or waterlogged)
  • Pollution due to irrigated agriculture (percentage of aquifer polluted); evolution in the use of pesticides and nutrients
  • Change in water regime due to agriculture, sedimentation in dams (percentage of dam silting)

Health:
