Global Map of Irrigation Areas

Iran

The figures for the irrigated area per ostan total 6 913 800 ha [IR01]. The figures refer to 1994. Since the data were published in the Statistical Yearbook 2003, it can be assumed that more recent statistics are not available.

The irrigated areas in the west of the country were digitized from a land-use map [IR02]. Because the map covers only the west of the country, a course-scale land-use map [IR03] and two course-scale irrigation maps ([IR04]; [IR05]) were used to localize irrigated areas in the east of the country. In addition, satellite imagery [IR06] was used to find small irrigation schemes and to adjust the boundaries of the large schemes.

The distribution of irrigated area by sub-national units is listed in the table below.
