Agricultural Water Variable in the Nile Basin: Mapping the Issues and Examining Prospects to 2030.

The Landau Network-Centro Volta (LNCV) was founded in 1995 at the “Centro di Cultura Scientifica A. Volta” in Como, Italy. It is a non-profit and non-governmental organization that aims to promote dialogue and focuses on international security and policy issues, including water security.

LNCV is organizing an international forum on “The Agricultural Water Variable in the Nile Basin: Mapping the Issues and Examining Prospects to 2030”. The event will be held in Como, Italy, on 19-21July 2007.

Long term water and food security are essential for socio-economic development in the Nile Basin states. The Forum will assess the scope for regional cooperation in agricultural production, marketing, and trade. It provides an opportunity for multidisciplinary discussions regarding:

• Virtual water: embedded water in crop and livestock production and trade across the basin;
• Demand for key water dependant crops and livestock for 2030;
• Explore technical and economic prospects for national and regional responses within the basin.

The Forum is organized jointly with FAO. It will build on the results of project “Information Products for Nile Basin Water Resources Management” and on a study titled “Virtual Water Flows of Nile Basin States” conducted by the London Water Research Group (WRG), both financed by the Italian MFA.

The Forum is open to a selected group of experts/professionals, and representatives of national and international institutions in particular from the Nile Basin countries.
