ENACT/ENAF online courses

 

The online versions of the ENACT and ENAF courses have been successfully adapted from the face-to-face using MoodleTM, a leading open-source virtual learning platform. Both courses have been extensively piloted (academia, NGOs, international institutions) and revised in line with participant and tutor feedback.  

 

Who is the course for?

  • 10 ½ units that cover the need for nutrition education (NE); what people need to know about food and diet, and how to talk about these issues with people; where NE is most practised and most needed; the essential elements in the process of NE and the main prevailing approaches, their strengths and limitations; theory and its application; the process of developing an intervention, from formative research through planning and implementation to evaluation; the wider food environment and the need for advocacy.
  • About 20 activities per unit, involving experiential learning, data research, discussion, practical approaches, group work, debate, critical thinking, reading for a range of purposes , opinion-sharing, case studies, and knowledge-checking, among others.
  • Outside activities in every unit to apply what is learnt.
  • Project work: a participatory nutrition education mini-project, carried out in four sessions over four units with participants from the community. The main activities are situation analysis, planning, implementation and evaluation.
  • A wide variety of resources including infographics, articles, databases, resource books, videos, checklists, guidelines and working documents (e.g. needs analyses, project documents).

What is required to follow the course?

  • Regular access to internet
  • Recommended PC/Windows browsers: Firefox 4 or later, Google Chrome 11 or later, Opera 9 or later. Internet explorer is not recommended.
  • Recommended Mac browsers: Firefox 4 or later, Safari 5 or later, Google Chrome 11 or later.

How does it work? 

The course is for anyone with a background in nutrition who has, or will have, a professional need to handle nutrition education: for example, undergraduate students in nutrition, health, agriculture or education, and also agriculturists, nurses, health service managers, community workers, or NGO staff.

  • Time: about 10-13 hours per unit for course participants, and about 10 hours per unit for tutors.
  • Technical requirements: Each unit is spread over one or two weeks. A new unit is made available each week. Participants work through the unit independently, in pairs or as a group, completing the activities. During each unit an "outside activity” or project session is carried out and reported on. The tutor assesses the coursework and gives feedback throughout the unit.
