Guyana launched its food-based dietary guidelines in 2004.

Process and stakeholders

The guidelines were developed by the Food-based Dietary Guidelines National Committee, under the leadership of the Food Policy Division from the Ministry of Health, with the participation of the Ministries of Education, Agriculture and Finance, the Guyana Association of Home Economists, universities and consumer organizations. The process was supported by the Caribbean Food and Nutrition Institute and the Pan American Health Organization.

The guidelines are endorsed by the Ministry of Health.

Intended audience

The Guyanese guidelines are targeted at the healthy population over 2 years of age.

Food guide

The guide chosen by Guyana to represent its guidelines is a ‘stew pot’ filled with six food groups: staples, vegetables, fruits, legumes, food from animals and fats. Outside the pot are images of people doing physical activity.


  • Every day eat a mixture of foods from the food groups shown in the ‘stew pot’.
  • Grow, store and prepare foods in a clean and safe way.
  • Use less salt in your food.
  • Eat foods that are low in fat.
  • Use less fats and oils in preparing and cooking food.
  • Make physical activity and exercise a daily habit.
  • It is advisable not to drink alcohol, but for those who do, not more than one drink per day is recommended.
