Official name

Dietary guidelines for the Peruvian population (Spanish: Guías alimentarias para la población Peruana).

Publication year

Peru published its first dietary guidelines in 2019.

Process and stakeholders

The National Center for Food and Nutrition within the National Health Institute has developed the FBDGs. The development process also involved the participation of representatives from public entities, academia, professional associations and research institutions, as well as the technical support from FAO.   

Intended audience

The guidelines are directed at the general population.

The technical document is meant for health promotion purposes in all health centers and medical services of regional and local governments, social security and private health centers, among others. 

Food guide

Peru's food guide is represented by two circles and a base. The outermost circle includes physical activity, drinking and commensality recommendations. The inner circle showcases the main food groups (cereals, tubers and legumes; fruits; vegetables; animal-source foods; milk and dairy; fats and sugars) in the proportionality that they are recommended.

  • Reduce the consumption of processed foods to protect your health.
  • Protect your health avoiding the consumption of ultra-processed foods.
  • Add colour and health to your life, eat fruits and vegetables every day.
  • Strengthen your body and mind eating one animal-source food every day (eggs, meats, offal, fish and dairy).
  • Dont miss legumes, they are tasty, healthy and can be prepared in many ways.
  • Protect your health, avoid weight gain by reducing the consumption of added sugar in your meals and drinks.
  • Take care of your weight by consuming rice, pasta and bread in moderation.
  • Avoid high blood pressure reducing the use of salt in your meals.
  • Be healthy by drinking 6-8 glasses of water every day.
  • Keep your body and mind active and alert, practice at least 30 minutes of physical activity every day.
  • Prefer home-made meals and enjoy them in company.
