Dietary guidelines for Mongolians.

Publication year

The first edition of the dietary guidelines was released in 1990. The guidelines and food guide are reviewed every 5 years with the latest version having been published in 2010.

Process and stakeholders

The Nutrition Research Department of the National Centre of Public Health, Ministry of Health, is responsible for reviewing, updating and publishing the guidelines, in collaboration with the Ministry of Food and Agriculture of Mongolia. Nutrition-related institutes and non-governmental organizations are consulted in the process.

The guidelines are endorsed by the Ministry of Health.

Intended audience

The guidelines are intended for people 2 years and over.

Food guide

The national food guide is the ger, the Mongolian national wooden tent, which is divided into three levels of recommended consumption. Cereals and cereal products are placed at the bottom of the tent; vegetables, meat, fish and eggs are on the second level, and fruits and dairy products on the final level.

Messages

  • Consume a variety of nutrient-dense foods and beverages.
  • Consume three or more servings of vegetables and at least two servings of fruit per day.
  • Consume milk and milk products every day.
  • Keep total fat intake below 30% of calories, and limit fats coming from animal sources.
  • Choose and prepare foods and beverages with little added sugar and salt.
  • Limit alcoholic beverages.
  • Choose healthy food and beverages and consume the amounts recommended for your physical features.
  • Consume safe food.
  • Engage in regular physical activity and maintain a healthy body weight.
  • Drink safe and clean water.
