Agro Eco Louis Bolk Institute

Agro Eco Louis Bolk Institute conducts research on organic agriculture, nutrition and health care and engages in knowledge transfer in Africa.  The Institute, which is based in the Netherlands, has two regional offices in Africa to engage in research and information dissemination around tropical organic agriculture: Eastern Africa (Uganda) and West Africa (Ghana).  Research at the Institute is divided into four thematic areas: Human, Animal, Plant and Soil.  Current studies include organic productivity trials using different pest and disease management strategies; organic cotton staple length trials; studies on organic livestock rearing techniques; research on the nutritional and health attributes of organic food; and work in support of organic social impact research.

Agroscope Reckenholz-Tänikon Research Station (ART)

ART is a federal research centre of the Swiss Federal Office for Agriculture focusing on plant production and animal husbandry systems.  Research at the Station combines ecology, economics and agricultural engineering to support an agricultural system that is non-industrial in nature.  Studies on organic agriculture are focused on looking for solutions to technical problems in organic production in arable crops, in grassland systems and in management of organic manure, farm and ground fertilizers in order to maintain soil fertility and produce high yields.  In partnership with FiBL, ART maintains a long-term trial on organic and biodynamic versus conventional farming known as the DOK project.

Arab Center for the Studies of Arid Zones and Dry Lands (ACSAD)

ACSAD works within the framework of the League of Arab States to unify Arab efforts to develop agricultural research in the arid and semi-arid areas.  The Animal Wealth Division of the Center aims to increase the productivity of small ruminants (sheep and goats) through genetic improvements, improving the productivty of indigenous cattle and camel, and improving the efficiency of the utilization of feed resources.  The Soil and Water Uses Division is concerned with identifying techniques for the optimum exploitation of soil and water resources.  This Division works to advance early detection and monitoring of the desertification process, prevent soil degradation, and establish soil databases in the Arab countries.

Arid Zone Research Centre, Pakistan Agricultural Research Council (PARC)

PARC is the federal agricultural research organization of the Pakistani government.  The vision of the Arid Zone Research Centre is to improve the productivity of small ruminants (sheep and goat) under conditions of low-forage availability.  The Centre is focused on raising livestock under grazing conditions with minimal supplemental feeding and determining the type and requirements of supplemental feeds.

Center for Sustaining Agriculture and Natural Resources (CSANR), Washington State University

CSANR is actively supporting the expansion of organic agriculture through teaching, research and outreach.  Current research priorities in organic agriculture include nutrient and soil management, the integration of livestock and cropping systems, pest management, seed production, food quality and economics.

Central Arid Zone Research Institute (CAZRI)

CAZRI is a federal research institute of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research.  Its mandate is to undertake research that will contribute to the development of sustainable farming systems in the arid ecosystem.  The Division of Animal Science & Forage researches livestock issues such as: health/deficiency diseases, impact of drought on production and reproduction status, formulation of supplementary and complete feed, feeding management, and genetic improvement of breeds, as well as pasture issues such as: impact of drought on feed availability, establishment of suitable Silvi pasture system for optimum yield of grasses, and improvement of indigenous grasses.  The Division of Natural Resources and Environment researches the integrated assessment of natural resources including soil and water, soil carbon and carbon sequestration, desertification assessment and mapping, soil fertility changes, and evapo-transpiration of arid zone crops.

Centre for Arid Zone Studies, University of Maiduguri

This Centre does multi-disciplinary research on problems that affect arid areas including desertification, drought and soil degration, and crop and livestock issues.  It includes work on ecology, hydrology, geomorphology, climatology, rural development, human and animal health, and socio-economical problems.  Specific research topics include soil and moisture changes in relation to land use patterns, over-cultivation and grazing leading to desertification, rehabilitation of degraded lands, and prevention of livestock diseases.

Compendium of Animal Health & Welfare in Organic Farming

This project was funded until 2007 by DEFRA and managed by Dutchy College, Cornwall with VEERU at the University of Reading and the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Glasgow.  The project website houses research and advisory information on animal health and welfare relevant to organic livestock production for farmers, veterinarians, and organic advisors.  It is divided into three major sections: veterinary management, health and welfare, and disease management.  Subsections include biosecurity, food safety, housing, feeding, and animal behaviour.
