Agro Eco Louis Bolk Institute

Agro Eco Louis Bolk Institute conducts research on organic agriculture, nutrition and health care and engages in knowledge transfer in Africa.  The Institute, which is based in the Netherlands, has two regional offices in Africa to engage in research and information dissemination around tropical organic agriculture: Eastern Africa (Uganda) and West Africa (Ghana).  Research at the Institute is divided into four thematic areas: Human, Animal, Plant and Soil.  Current studies include organic productivity trials using different pest and disease management strategies; organic cotton staple length trials; studies on organic livestock rearing techniques; research on the nutritional and health attributes of organic food; and work in support of organic social impact research.

The Division of Organic Foodstuffs is a teaching and research division interested in the quality of organically produced foods and their impact on health.  Researchers in this division are interested in the quality of organically produced foods and their impact on health.  Recent research includes comparative studies on the nutritional quality of organic versus conventional plant products.

Food, Consumer Behaviour and Health Research Centre, University of Surrey

The Centre aims to understand consumer behaviour and food choice and to integrate the insights with knowledge of the biological sciences.  The Centre is not currently conducting research on organic agriculture or products, but previously undertook a three year study on consumer decision-making on organic products.

Institute of Ecological Farming, University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Sciences (BOKU)

The Institute for Ecological Farming is the largest research body in Austria dealing with ecological land management. The Institute supervises and coordinates teaching and research on ecological land management both within the BOKU as well as externally, at both national and international level. The Institute has a division dedicated to organic agriculture. Research at the Institute is diverse, including studies on farming systems and management, farmers, consumers, agro-energy, climatic conditions and knowledge transfer.

International Centre for Research in Organic Food Systems (ICROFS)

ICROFS is a collaboration between research groups in different institutions and universities and coordinated through a head office in Denmark. The secretariat of ICROFS initiates, coordinates, and participates in international research activities. The aim of their work is to strengthen the positions of organic farming and food systems and to increase the conversion possibilities from conventional farming production. ICROFS plays a central role in a large number of research endeavours, including the DARCOF III, CORE Organic, CERTCOST and GlobalOrg projects. ICROFS also manages Organic Eprints, an open, online archive for research in organic agriculture with more that 8,000 publications.

International Organic Food, Quality and Health Research Association (FQH)

FQH aims to establish a network of research institutions that specialize in the relationship between organic food and human health. Involved research institutions prioritise topics and projects that can be implemented through collective effort. In addition to developing a common research agenda, FQH produces a free newsletter and coordinates member workshops and meetings. The coordinator and secretariat are housed at the Agro Eco Louis Bolk Institute in the Netherlands.

Laboratory of Agribusiness Management, Agricultural University of Athens

The Laboratory undertakes application management-related research in agri-food enterprises and farm holdings.  One of the Laboratory’s areas of expertise is understanding consumer behaviour towards purchase of organic food and wine products.  In the past several projects on the marketing of organic products have been undertaken.
