Title: Strengthening Jamaica’s Food Security Programme

Objective:

The overall objective of the project is to reduce poverty and enhance food security for vulnerable groups through improved availability of safe, affordable and nutritious food for the rural population and urban poor. The project is planned for duration of two years (since May 2009 until June 2011) and includes among others objectives:

 

  • The establishment of organic production demonstration plots for farmers in each of the 12 parishes.
  • The training of 80 farmers and 40 extension officers in improved organic farming practices.
  • The implementation of a market promotional campaign to include radio transmissions, nutritional information in the form of brochures and the expansion of existing promotional activities (“Buy Jamaican” campaign).

 

Throughout the duration of the project FAO will forge close links with the Government of Jamaica, through the Ministry of Agriculture, and with the Jamaica Organic Agriculture Movement.
