CIHEAM and FAO are jointly organizing a technical workshop on the development of Voluntary Guidelines for the Sustainability of the Mediterranean diet in the Mediterranean region. The workshop is taking place on 14-15 March 2017 at CIHEAM-Bari in Valenzano (Bari, Italy). The FAO-CIHEAM workshop advances the 2016 Call for Action for the Revitalization of the Mediterranean Diet, which was issued, at the First World Conference on the Mediterranean Diet, within the UN Decade of Action on Nutrition, and as a follow up to the 2015 MEDIET EXPO Call for Action: Time to Act, issued at the EXPO 2015 Milan. FAO hosted the International Conference on the Quantification of Ecological Services for Sustainable Agriculture (QuESSA), a project delivered with 14 European research, education and extension organizations across Europe which contributes to the development of sustainable agricultural systems. The event took place in Rome, FAO HQ. FAO shared its experiences, challenges and opportunities linking agroecology and ecosystem approaches. The QuESSA International Conference draws more than 80 participants from around the region to discuss ecological services, management of semi-natural habitats, and linkages between agroecology and ecosystem approaches. The International Center for Biosaline Agriculture, FAO, the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment of the United Arab Emirates, Zayed University, the Islamic Development Bank and the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa organized the International Quinoa Conference 2016 on Quinoa for Future Food and Nutrition Security in Marginal Environments. The conference took place in Dubai. It brought together leading scientists, practitionners and decision-makers to showcase the latest developments in quinoa researchm production and trade. FAO and the Young Professionals for Agricultural Development (YPARD) organized a special session with students from different regions of the world on the occasion of the International Symposium on Sustainable Food Systems for Healthy Diets and Improved Nutrition to identify and convey key messages from the student community to policy and decision makers.  In preparation for the event, these universities hosted ‘webinars’ in their premises on 1 December 2016 to follow the Opening Session of the Symposium and gather inputs from students which have been presented during the Student Interactive Session.

The Italian Society for International Organization (SIOI – UNA Italy), the Students’ Movement for International Organization (MSOI/UNYA-Italy), in partnership with the United States Diplomatic Mission to Italy, and with the technical support of FAO launched ZERO Hackathon. About 160 highly motivated young students, representing universities from around the world convened in Rome, at FAO, and participated to the first youth hackathon on the most pressing international issues related, but not limited, to SDGs, climate change, sustainability, zero hunger generation, food and agriculture. Participants developed innovative high-impact ideas, projects, services and/or tools capable of meeting international requirements and presented sustainable responses. Read...
