The Regional South-South and Triangular Cooperation panel discussion took place in Antalya (Turkey). FAO facilitated the discussion between government representatives (Russia, Azerbaijan) and researchers (CIHEAM, and Turkey), elaborating the role and importance of partnerships amongst research institutions. The main objectives of the side event highlighted the results achieved thoroughly SSC/TrC facilitated by FAO and explored opportunities for expanding such cooperation through strategic engagements with national agriculture research institutions of REU member states. The Institute of Human Nutrition of Columbia University and the High Level Panel of Experts on Food Security and Nutrition (HLPE) of the United Nations Committee on World Food Security (CFS) organized an International Seminar on Food Security and Nutrition in the perspective of Agenda 2030: Inter-linkages and key issues for the implementation of the SDGs. FAO, Bioversity International and the Permanent Representation of Italy to the UN jointly hosted a seminar on Soils and pulses: symbiosis for life. The event focussed on the reciprocal relationship between soils and pulses. The event took place in Rome, FAO HQ and counted the participation of the three Italian Research Institutions: Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche -CNR, Consiglio per la ricerca in agricoltura e l'analisi dell'economia agraria-CRA and the Agenzia nazionale per le nuove tecnologie, l'energia e lo sviluppo economico sostenibile- ENEA. The International Centre for Biosaline Agriculture and the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa organized a course on Land degradation and soil management in salt-affected areas in Africa in Addis Ababa (Ethiopia). Participants learned about soil salinity assessment and management which are essential for optimum crop production in saline environments, with a special emphasis on evaluating non-conventional water resources and land fertility of salt-affected areas.
