Global Launch of the UN Decade of Family Farming 2019-2028

27/05/2019 - 29/05/2019
FAO HQ, Rome, Italy

Background

On 20 December 2017, the United Nations General Assembly unanimously adopted resolution (A/RES/72/239), by which it declared 2019-2028 to be the Decade of Family Farming (Decade). FAO and IFAD actively supported the campaign leading to the resolution and have been called upon by the General Assembly to co-lead the implementation of the Decade in cooperation with a broad range of partners.

Building on the success of the international Year of Family Farming of 2014 and on the improved knowledge about the multiple contribution of family farmers to sustainable rural life, the Decade will aim at focusing systematically on cross-cutting and multi-dimensional issues which are of concern to family farmers. The objective is to improve national results in the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), while positioning family farmers as key agents of change in transforming food systems. The Decade will provide ten more years for a wide range of stakeholders to strengthen political commitments to reformulate programs and institutional arrangements for the benefit of family farming.

The Global Launch of the United Nations Decade of Family Farming, co-organized by FAO and IFAD, will take place on 27-29 May 2019, at the FAO headquarters in Rome, Italy.

The main objectives of the event are to:

  • Present the Decade’s objectives and the Global Action Plan;
  • Seek for engagement of various stakeholders through concrete actions at country level to support smallholder family farming through enabling policies and investments;
  • Increase understanding about the potentials and multi-dimensional contributions of family farming and how it can contribute to the achievement of SDGs.

Program

The Global Launch will take place over the course of three days: two days of preparatory meetings where the direct exchange with and between family farmers from different regions and sectors will take place, as well as forums to initiate discussions for potential actions in different regions. This will be followed by an official launch on 29 May 2019. Please click here for the program.

The event will bring together a range of stakeholders working for sustainable food and agriculture, including, representatives of governments, intergovernmental organizations and of non-state actors, with a special emphasis on farmers and their global, regional and national organizations and constituencies.
