African Farm/Family Forestry Producer Organizations Conference, 9-11 June 2015, Nairobi, Kenya

The African Farm/Family Forestry Producer Organizations Conference: "Forestry for improved livelihoods" was organized by The International Family Forest Alliance (IFFA), in collaboration with the Kenya Forest Service (KFS), the Forest Action Network (FAN), the Forest and Farm Facility and FAO, in Nairobi, Kenya, from 9 to 11 June, 2015. The Conference provided a unique opportunity to Forest and Farm Producer Organizations (FFPOs) to share experience and exchange views on the difficulties they face and the solutions they find in their respective countries. This important event counted over 120 participants from at least 15 African countries, a significant number of them from producer organizations.

Opening Ceremony and round table discussions

The Opening ceremony was done by the Minister for Environment, Water and Natural Resources, the FAO Representative, the Director of the Kenya Forest Service, the President of IFFA, and a representative from the African Union Commission. Round table discussions allowed active participation on tenure, access to markets and services, organizational strengthening.

Outcome: an African Resolution of the African Farm Family Forest Producer Organizations

As a major outcome of the Conference, participants will develop a common message on the needs and claims of African farm and family producers that they would want to convey to the World Forestry Congress in September 2015 in Durban, South Africa, and its pre-congress organized to raise the profile and the voices of forest and farm producer organizations.

Field trip of the Conference

A field trip in Kiambu, Murang’a and Nyandarua counties was organised to illustrate challenges but also opportunities faced by locally controlled forestry stakeholders. This Conference is part of a growing movement, supported by the FFF, initiated by the Forest and Farm producer organizations of the entire world towards the upcoming World Forestry Congress.


Exchange visit : 5-7 June 2015

Prior to the Kenya Conference was organised an exchange visit to Nakuru County in Kenya’s Great Rift Valley. It involved participants from the four African countries taking part in the FFF Programme: Kenya, Gambia, Liberia and Zambia. The exchange trip was organized in conjunction with FAO Kenya, Farm Forestry –Smallholder Producers Association of Kenya and Kenya Forest Service. Case studies in the four countries were shared and discussion on enabling policy environment for FFPOs took place. Participants met 6 groups undertaking different activities in farm forestry. It also had an interactive meeting with groups from Nakuru and the County Government at a Nakuru Hotel. The exchange programme also included a whole day workshop at Kenya Forest Service where different presentations were from the Government through KFS, WeEffect, FAO and FFF followed by discussions by participants.
