23/09/2019

Hosted by the Kansas State University in Manhattan (Kansas, United States), the 9th annual Multi-Stakeholder Partnership (MSP) Meeting of the Global Agenda for Sustainable Livestock (GASL) was held on 9-12 September.

The topic this year was "Innovation for Sustainable Livestock Systems", with four sustainability domains: food and nutrition security, livelihoods and economic growth, animal health and welfare, and climate and natural resource use.

The Livestock Environmental Assessment and Performance (LEAP) Partnership itself and its products development were acknowledged as a form of innovation enabling to boost actions to accelerate progress towards the SDGs. Caroline Emond, Director-General of the International Dairy Federation (IDF) and LEAP Chair 2019, represented LEAP in the Plenary Session on 10 September and invited GASL members to the LEAP Plenary Meeting taking place on 21 October 2019, at FAO headquarters.

The LEAP manager, Camillo De Camillis, also reported progress to GASL members. During his presentation, he highlighted the latest publications, called for participation in the ongoing public reviews and invited GASL and its members to engage in the road testing of FAO LEAP guidelines.

Around 300 participants of over 30 different countries were learning, discussing and developing ideas for enhancing sustainability in the global livestock sector through innovation. There were presentations, panels, posters, field tours, and discussion throughout the week focused on this theme, highlighting examples from throughout the world of innovative solutions to address sustainable livestock production and agrifood systems.
