Fall Armyworm (FAW) (Spodoptera frugiperda), is an insect pest affecting more than 80 plant species, causing damage to economically important cultivated cereals such as maize, rice, sorghum, as well as vegetable crops and cotton. It is native to tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas. It is the larval stage of the insect that causes the damage. FAW reproduces at a rate of several generations per year, and the moth can fly up to 100 km per night. 7 April 2020, Rome/Nanjing - The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Jiangsu Academy of Agricultural Sciences (JAAS) have signed a partnership agreement which foresees joint efforts to support smallholder farmers through technological innovation.

The Parliamentary Front Against Hunger calls on countries to keep food production and supply chains alive and support the most vulnerable
Santiago de Chile - The Parliamentary Front against Hunger in Latin America and the Caribbean today released an open letter calling not to neglect the fight against hunger and malnutrition during the COVID-19 pandemic. In the text, the more than 500 parliamentarians who are part of this legislative network, which receives support from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), stated that in Latin American and Caribbean countries "not everybody has the means to feed adequately in a quarantined state, "and called on countries to ensure that food production, processing and supply chains are kept alive".
