2020年10月19日 北京 - 在2020年世界粮食日之际，联合国粮农组织驻华代表处与今日头条共同举办了“粮食英雄”评选活动，以表彰在疫情一线为了保障食物供给而贡献力量的粮食英雄。今日头条是一家日活跃用户达1.2亿的中国社交媒体平台。10月16日，通过初选的15名入围候选人资料在今日头条平台发布，并由公众进行投票。在10月16日至25日的十天投票期内，15名候选人的总票数达到1,154,727张。最后，获得公众累计投票数前五名的候选人被授予“2020年度粮食英雄”称号。本次活动吸引了大量媒体报道，提高了“粮食英雄”、世界粮食日和联合国粮农组织的知名度。该活动在今日头条的曝光量到达4400多万，包括“粮食英雄”开屏广告的点击量以及由联合国粮农组织创建的“粮食英雄”和“搜寻粮食英雄”两个话题标签的点击量。多家媒体对“粮食英雄”活动进行了报道，提及此活动的新闻报道多达百余篇。通过与今日头条的合作，此次活动成功获得了总价值约130万美元的公益开屏广告和公益活动推广。今年世界粮食日期间，在另一家中国社交媒体平台微博上，由联合国粮农组织创建的话题“世界粮食日”的讨论量超过了5.6亿。本活动也在微博平台进行了发布和推广，话题标签为“粮食英雄”和“世界粮食日”，增加了世界粮食日在微博上的总体曝光度。
