The “Dr. Fridtjof Nansen” will conduct marine science research to support sustainable fisheries, study climate change impacts on oceansFAO and Norway have today launched a brand new, state-of-the-art marine studies vessel, among the most advanced of its kind — and the only research ship on the globe that flies the UN flag. Its mission: To investigate some of the planet's least-explored oceans, using cutting-edge technology and sophisticated equipment to help developing countries assemble scientific data critical to sustainable fisheries management and study how a changing climate is affecting our oceans.

The role of higher learning institutions are very key in achieving these ambitious goals as the majority of poor people in developing countries, including Sierra Leone, live in rural areas and education is a key factor in helping to reduce the level of poverty.
